Aliquippa, Industrial city in Beaver County, Pennsylvania

Aliquippa is a city in Beaver County in western Pennsylvania, stretching along the Ohio River northwest of Pittsburgh. Residential neighborhoods alternate with former industrial sites spread across the hilly riverbank.

The settlement began in 1750 as a trading post between French settlers and native tribes. General Anthony Wayne used the area in 1793 as a training camp for troops before a major conflict in the Northwest Territory.

The name comes from a Seneca leader who lived in this area during the 18th century. Descendants of European immigrants still shape the local churches and community centers along the residential streets.

Interstate 376 leads directly to Pittsburgh Airport and downtown. The riverside location means some areas are hilly and sidewalks can be steep in places.

The Jones and Laughlin steel mill once shaped the entire structure of the city and created separate neighborhoods for different immigrant groups. This spatial division remains visible today in the layout of streets and buildings.
