Madison, County seat in Morgan County, Georgia
Madison is a county seat in Morgan County, Georgia, containing around 100 preserved structures spanning different periods with architectural styles ranging from Federal to Victorian and Greek Revival. These buildings line the streets and create a distinctive appearance that reflects the town's development over time.
The town was founded in 1809 and developed initially as a transportation center for the region. Early in the 1800s, it grew into a prosperous cotton trading hub that benefited from regional commercial networks.
The Madison-Morgan Cultural Center hosts theater performances, concerts, and exhibitions within a former school building, serving as a gathering place for artistic expression. These programs reflect how the community values and shares its creative traditions with visitors.
The town sits roughly 60 miles east of Atlanta along Interstate 20, making it accessible as a day trip from the metro area. Walking tours of the historic district are offered daily and help visitors navigate and understand the buildings throughout the town center.
The town escaped destruction during the Civil War when General Sherman's army passed through in 1864, allowing it to retain many of its antebellum buildings. This rare survival makes it one of the few Southern towns with so many original structures remaining from that era.
