Carter-Newton House, Greek Revival residence in Madison Historic District, United States.
The Carter-Newton House is a Greek Revival residence on Academy Street in Madison featuring four fluted Scamozzi columns supporting a wide front porch. The structure contains eight large rooms and three additional spaces, with nine fireplaces distributed throughout.
The house was built in 1840 by Carter Shepherd and Nancy Whitfield Shepherd on the site of the former Madison Male Academy. That academy had been destroyed by fire, clearing the land for this new residence.
The house reflects architectural tastes favored by successful plantation owners in this area before the Civil War. Greek Revival design with its prominent columns and classical proportions was a popular choice for important family residences during this era.
The property covers approximately one developed acre with the main house and six additional undeveloped acres extending behind it. Visitors should be aware of the full extent to appreciate the complete composition of residence and grounds.
The residence served as a filming location for two motion pictures shot in 2018 and 2019. Its photogenic facade and classical architecture made it an attractive backdrop for film production companies.
