Madison Historic District

Madison Historic District is a neighborhood with 19th-century buildings designed in Greek Revival, Victorian, and Italianate styles spread across residential and commercial blocks. The structures range from family homes to business buildings and show varying degrees of preservation and restoration work.

The area developed as a railroad settlement in the early 1800s and grew because of its role as a trade hub. The Civil War highlighted its strategic rail connections, which shaped its growth and left marks visible in the layout and types of buildings that survive today.

The district reflects the lasting importance of the railroad and commerce in shaping how people built and organized their community. Walking through, you see the marks of different groups who lived and worked here over the decades.

The Douglass Beneficial Society building, opened in 1898, tells the story of a community that many visitors overlook. It stands as a marker of how people organized to help one another during a difficult time in history.
