Newton County Courthouse
Newton County Courthouse, Historic courthouse in Covington, United States
Newton County Courthouse is a county courthouse in Covington featuring Second Empire style architecture with a distinctive clock tower at its crown. The three-story building sits prominently at Courthouse Square and houses administrative offices and commission chambers within its walls.
The courthouse was built in 1884 following the destruction of its predecessor in a fire. This new building marked the beginning of a fresh chapter for county governance and administration in Covington.
The courthouse serves as a focal point where the community gathers to conduct public business and observe civic traditions. Visitors notice how the building anchors daily life in the town center and remains a symbol of local governance.
The building stands at Clark Street in downtown Covington and is easily reachable on foot from the town center. Keep in mind that it remains an active government building with restricted areas, so access may be limited to certain parts.
A Seth Thomas clock was installed in the tower in 1885 and still operates today following restoration work. This mechanical timepiece continues to mark the hours for the town and remains one of the oldest working parts of the structure.
