Germantown is a city in Shelby County, Tennessee, covering an area of 17.6 square miles (45.6 square kilometers). The settlement sits at an elevation of 377 feet (115 meters) in the Memphis metropolitan area and is crossed by roads and residential neighborhoods.
Settlement began in 1825 with Nashoba Plantation, which became known as Pea Ridge in 1833. In 1836 the place was renamed after surveyor N. T. German and developed along the Memphis and Charleston Railroad.
The city takes its name from surveyor N. T. German, whose surname was adopted by residents in the 1830s. Today the community gathers in neighborhood parks and recreational areas where families spend weekends walking or playing sports.
Numerous parks, walking trails and sports facilities are spread across the area and easily reached by main roads. Emergency services typically respond within five minutes to calls.
The Germantown Train Museum sits in a station building constructed in 1948 on the site of the original 1868 depot. The exhibit documents the history of the Memphis and Charleston Railroad, which passed through the area in the 19th century.
