Oaklawn Garden, Botanical garden in Germantown, Tennessee, United States.
Oaklawn Garden is a botanical garden in Germantown, Tennessee, set on a large property with collections of oaks, birches, daffodils, azaleas, and native trees and flowers. The grounds also display old vehicles and railway cars alongside the plant collections.
The property dates to 1854, when it belonged to William Carter. In 1918, Fritz Hussy and Mamie Cloyes took over and began turning it into a garden.
The grounds display old vehicles and railway cars that connect visitors to the everyday life of the region in earlier times. These objects sit alongside the plants, giving the place a layered character that goes beyond a typical garden visit.
The garden is free to visit and can be explored at your own pace. Donations are welcome to help with the upkeep of the grounds.
Since 1924, the garden has grown around 300 varieties of a single flowering plant across about 2 acres (0.8 hectares). Focusing a collection on one plant group for that long is rare for a garden of this size.
