Dixon Gallery and Gardens, Garden and art museum in Memphis, United States
The Dixon Gallery and Gardens is an art and garden museum spanning 17 acres with formal plantings, woodland areas, and spaces for art collections. A central museum building connects the different garden sections and serves as the anchoring point of the entire property.
The estate was founded in 1942 when Hugo and Margaret Dixon built their private residence with gardens and an art collection on this land. Over time, the original home was converted into a public museum while the gardens became accessible to visitors.
French Impressionist paintings and American artworks from the late 19th and early 20th centuries shape the space throughout the site. These pieces reflect the taste that guided how the original owners designed their surroundings.
The site is open Tuesday through Sunday and allows visitors to explore both the gardens and indoor spaces at their own pace. Guided tours are available for both areas to help with understanding and navigating the grounds.
The grounds contain separate sections dedicated to growing cut flowers, where visitors can see practical gardening methods in action. These areas show how ornamental spaces can also be functional and produce blooms or food for household use.
