Libertyland, Amusement park in Memphis, Tennessee, US
Libertyland was an amusement park in Memphis with 24 different rides including roller coasters and water attractions spread across several themed sections. The grounds were part of the Mid-South Fairgrounds complex and also included game areas and carnival attractions for visitors of all ages.
The park opened on July 4, 1976, as part of the Mid-South Fairgrounds and became a popular destination for families throughout the region. Financial difficulties led to its closure in 2005 after nearly three decades of operation.
Elvis Presley rented the entire park one evening in August 1977 for his daughter Lisa Marie and their family spent hours riding the attractions until dawn. That private night became one of the most remembered episodes in the park's story and shows how deeply Memphis celebrities connected with this local gathering place.
The former park grounds were transformed into Tiger Lane and now contain parking spaces along with a youth sports complex completed in 2022. The area now serves mainly as a venue for local sporting events and parking for Fairgrounds visitors.
The wooden roller coaster called Zippin Pippin was relocated to Wisconsin after the closure and continues operating there today. This coaster was one of the oldest wooden roller coasters still running in the country and had counted Elvis among its riders.
