Greensburg is a county seat in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, located around 30 miles (48 kilometers) southeast of Pittsburgh at an elevation of 310 meters. Downtown includes commercial districts, industrial facilities and public buildings along several streets extending from a central square.
The settlement formed in the late 18th century around an inn on a wagon route between Philadelphia and Fort Pitt. Official incorporation as a borough took place in 1799 as the region attracted more settlers and needed administrative structures.
The Westmoreland Museum of American Art displays paintings and sculptures spanning several centuries in a building above downtown. The Palace Theatre hosts musicians and theater companies on a regular basis, drawing visitors from across the region who spend evenings in the historic hall.
The town can be explored on foot from the center, with most public facilities and shops located within a few blocks. Parking is available near the main streets, allowing visitors to arrive by car and then continue on foot.
The surrounding hills contain natural gas deposits and coal seams that have shaped the local economy since the 19th century. Some facilities now produce garage doors and electrical transformers, drawing energy and raw materials from nearby sources.
