Easton, Administrative center in Talbot County, Maryland
Easton is the county seat of Talbot County, located on Maryland's Eastern Shore with residential neighborhoods, commercial streets, and public spaces spread throughout. The town center has the look of a classic American town with small shops and buildings from different eras.
The town was established in 1710 by an act of the colonial Maryland Assembly and received a brick courthouse as its administrative center. That original building was eventually replaced as the community grew and required different structures.
The Hill neighborhood has been home to a free Black community since 1790, and its presence shapes the town's character today. Residents built and maintain their own shops, churches, and gathering spaces that define daily life in this part of town.
The town has utilities established in the early 1900s that provide electricity, natural gas, water, and related services to residents throughout the area. Visitors can explore the downtown on foot and walk through different neighborhoods to see the full character of the place.
A painting by a French artist was discovered in a thrift store in 2008 and later sold for a substantial sum of money. The discovery surprised the community and showed that unexpected treasures can be found in ordinary places.
