Attica Correctional Facility, State prison in Attica, United States.
Attica Correctional Facility is a maximum security state prison located in western New York, roughly an hour south of Buffalo. The compound sits behind concrete walls with observation towers positioned along the outer boundary to monitor movement and entry.
The facility opened in 1931 as one of the most modern correctional buildings of its time. In September 1971, prisoners took control of parts of the compound in an uprising that ended after four days when state forces intervened.
The racial composition during the 1960s and 1970s reflected significant disparities, with two-thirds of inmates being Hispanic or African American.
The prison is located outside the town center and is not open to the public. Visitors with approved access must register in advance and pass through security checks at the entrance.
The construction cost in 1931 reached a level that was unprecedented for a correctional facility at the time. The design aimed to meet both security requirements and the reform ideas in corrections that were being discussed during that period.
