Six Flags Darien Lake, Amusement park and resort in Darien, United States
Six Flags Darien Lake is an amusement park and resort in Darien, New York, that combines roller coasters, water attractions and lodging options across a large property. The facility spreads across several themed sections with green spaces, lakes and pathways connecting rides, shows and dining areas.
Paul Snyder founded the recreational site in 1964 as a small camping area with a swimming pool and expanded it over the following years into a larger amusement park. Six Flags took over the property in 1999 and introduced new rides and themed sections.
The name comes from the nearby lake and the town of Darien, where families from the region often spend several days moving between rides and water areas. Many visitors return year after year and use the camping facilities for extended stays.
The park opens from early May through late October and offers a hotel, RV pitches and basic cabins for longer visits. Arriving early means shorter waiting times at popular rides and more space in dining areas.
One of the roller coasters is called Ride of Steel and reaches speeds over 75 miles per hour (120 kilometers per hour) on a track running through woods and over hills. In the evenings, a large outdoor stage often hosts concerts that keep visitors in the park after a day of rides.
