Bemidji State University, Public university in Bemidji, United States
Bemidji State University is a college on the shore of a lake in northern Minnesota, open to young adults from different regions of the United States and abroad. The grounds consist of several buildings spread across an expansive site with green areas and access to the water.
The institution opened in 1919 as a teacher training school and educated elementary teachers for the region for decades. In the seventies, the offer expanded, so the school transformed into a full college and received its current name.
The name connects to the town, which itself comes from an Ojibwe word for a lake that winds through the landscape. From the outside, the campus feels like a large residential neighborhood with brick and concrete buildings among older trees that provide shade in summer.
Access to the grounds usually happens via public roads that run around the site, and there are paths you can walk or bike on. Buildings are open during daytime, but certain areas remain closed to visitors, so you should stick to outdoor spaces and general facilities.
Athletic teams plunge into the lake after victories, a custom that began in 1995 and takes place even in winter when temperatures drop below freezing. This moment is often watched by fellow students who gather on the shore to cheer on the players.
