Tumwater Falls, Cascading waterfall system in Tumwater, United States.
Tumwater Falls is a cascade system where the Deschutes River drops through three distinct tiers of rock formations in a 15-acre park setting. The water plunges over rocky ledges, creating pools and mist at the base of each drop.
The waterfall served as a power source for early industries in the region and was key to establishing one of Washington's oldest European settlements. This industrial heritage shaped the city's development starting in the 1800s.
The name Tumwater comes from Chinook Jargon, where 'Tumtum' means a beating heart, reflecting how the falling water moves and pulses. You can feel this connection to the region's language and history as you watch the water flow.
A one-mile paved loop trail circles the falls with footbridges and viewing areas positioned throughout the route. The path is easy to walk and suitable for families and leashed dogs.
During autumn, salmon climb through the falls using a specially designed fish ladder, traveling to spawning grounds upstream. This seasonal migration happens right before visitor eyes, making it a memorable natural event to witness.
