Bowie State University, Public university in Bowie, United States
Bowie State University is a public university in the city of Bowie, Prince George's County, Maryland, where academic buildings, residence halls, and laboratories occupy a green campus dotted with walkways and gathering spaces. The grounds combine older brick structures with newer science and technology facilities that house classrooms and research areas.
The school was established in 1865 as Baltimore Normal School for Colored Teachers and relocated to Bowie in 1910 after gaining state recognition. Over the decades, it expanded from a teacher training institution into a comprehensive university offering a wide range of degree programs.
The institution is the oldest of its kind in Maryland and carries forward the legacy of its founding as a training school for African American educators through its academic programs today. Students gather in community spaces and participate in programming shaped by student-led organizations.
Visitors can walk through the campus along public pathways and observe the rhythm of student life around library buildings, athletic facilities, and common areas. Public events such as lectures or performances are sometimes open to outside guests and offer insight into the academic community.
In 2020, the institution received a 25 million dollar donation from MacKenzie Scott, the largest single gift in its history. This contribution enabled new investments in scholarships and academic programs.
