Beltsville Communications Annex, Government communications satellite station in Beltsville, Maryland, United States
Beltsville Communications Annex is a secure telecommunications relay facility in Maryland operated by the US Department of State. It serves as a backup center for official diplomatic messages and government transmissions, located on federal land outside Washington DC.
The center was set up in 1985 by the Department of State as a secure relay point away from Washington DC. Moving operations outside the capital was intended to protect diplomatic communications in case of disruption at the main hub.
The site sits within the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, a large federal farm campus. Large antennas are visible from the surrounding roads, rising above fields and research buildings in a way that feels unexpected for the area.
The facility sits on federal property in Beltsville and is closed to the public. There is no visitor access, and the surrounding perimeter is fenced and secured, so the site can only be seen from nearby public roads.
The facility processes a very large number of official records and data messages every day on behalf of diplomatic posts and foreign affairs agencies around the world. This volume of daily traffic makes it one of the busiest relay points in the federal government's communications network.
