Toaping Castle

Toaping Castle, Historical log house site in Greenbelt, United States.

Description

Toaping Castle is a historical log house site in Greenbelt, Maryland, where today a family cemetery marks the location at the end of Walker Drive behind a parking structure. The grounds also feature a historical marker at the intersection of Greenbelt Road and Walker Drive that helps visitors understand the original settlement layout.

History

The settlement was founded around 1750 by three Scottish brothers - Charles, Isaac, and Nathan Walker - on a 188-acre land grant in what is now Maryland. The Walker family became significant figures in the early colonial period, with their descendants contributing to the region for generations to come.

Culture

The site holds deep family roots for the Walker clan, a Scottish settler family whose generations left their mark on this region. Their connection to the land remains visible through the family cemetery and historical markers that dot the area.

Practical

The location sits at the intersection of urban and historical areas, making it easy for visitors to access the family cemetery from nearby parking facilities. Greenbelt Road provides convenient access and a nearby restaurant can serve as a useful reference point for finding the site.

Samuel Hamilton Walker, born here in 1817, became a respected Texas Ranger and later a United States Army officer of considerable rank. His career demonstrates how the next generation of this family left their mark far beyond this original settlement location.
