Lee's Summit is a city in Jackson County and Cass County in Missouri. It lies about 15 miles (25 kilometers) southeast of Kansas City and spreads across rolling terrain with residential neighborhoods, commercial streets, and several parks.
The settlement began in the 1860s along the planned railroad route to Kansas City. William Bullitt Howard founded the community under a different name, which was changed a few years later.
The name of the place refers to the highest point on the railroad line before reaching Kansas City. Today you can still walk through the older downtown area where several buildings from the early settlement years remain standing.
The city is easiest to reach by car, connected to Kansas City by several main roads. Most shops and restaurants sit along the main traffic routes and in the older downtown core.
The official name keeps the apostrophe in its spelling, which is rather uncommon among American city names. This detail goes back to the founding years and was never changed.
