The lake spans 200 acres of water surface and features a 2.3-mile paved walking path circling its perimeter in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Methodist leaders James Atkins and George Stuart established the Southern Assembly in 1908, purchasing 1,200 acres to create this religious gathering center.
The Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center functions as the headquarters for the World Methodist Council, connecting Methodist churches worldwide.
Visitors can participate in water activities including canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing, with only electric trolling motors permitted on the lake.
The surrounding Haywood County contains 18 mountain peaks exceeding 6,000 feet, marking the highest concentration of such elevations east of the Mississippi River.
