Garden Creek site, Archaeological site near Pigeon River in Haywood County, North Carolina, United States.

Garden Creek is an archaeological site where researchers found remains of two ancient villages and four earth mounds built along the river. The landscape still shows the earthwork structures that communities built over centuries.

The site shows signs of human presence starting thousands of years ago, but the most important buildings were made between 1000 and 1450. This period marked the development of more complex settlements along the river valley.

Shells, stone tools, and signs of shared dwellings show how people organized their daily lives in this river valley. The layout suggests communities that built together and valued connections.

The site is marked with a historical marker sign along the road and sits within a residential neighborhood. Access to the area is limited since it is now part of private property, so visitors should check ahead about viewing conditions.

Archaeologists found two rare connected earth lodges beneath one of the mounds, joined by a passageway between them. This unusual design is uncommon in the wider region and reveals how inhabitants solved living challenges.
