Pembroke, Town center in Robeson County, North Carolina.

Pembroke is a town in Robeson County, North Carolina, located roughly 90 miles from the Atlantic coast across flat land. The settlement developed around a train station and maintains a small-town character with buildings from different periods of its growth.

The town was incorporated in 1895 and named after a railroad worker who played a role in its development. The arrival of rail service helped establish the early settlement and its initial community.

The Lumbee Tribe maintains its administrative center in Pembroke, which shapes much of the town's community life and local identity. You can see the influence of Native American heritage throughout the town's institutions and everyday activities.

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke operates in town and offers various academic programs and graduate degrees. Visitors will find a small town with a local university presence that shapes much of the community activity.

The first brick building in town appeared in 1922, marking a shift away from wooden construction methods. This transition shows how the settlement evolved from temporary structures toward more lasting construction.
