Edina, Suburban city in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States
Edina is a suburban city in Hennepin County, Minnesota, located about eight miles southwest of central Minneapolis. The community spreads across residential districts with tree-lined streets, shopping centers, and a network of green spaces and walking paths.
The area began as farmland along Minnehaha Creek during the nineteenth century and grew into one of the first suburban communities near Minneapolis after incorporation in the late 1800s. A small settlement called Morningside remained separate for decades before rejoining the main town in the mid-1960s.
The city maintains 44 public parks covering 1,550 acres of land, where residents participate in organized sports programs and outdoor recreational activities.
Southdale Center opened in the 1950s as the first enclosed shopping mall in the country and now houses shops, restaurants, and services under one roof. Many parks are easy to reach from roadside parking, often with free lots and paths suitable for walking or cycling.
The community holds one of the earliest examples of an enclosed shopping mall still in operation, offering visitors a glimpse into a mid-twentieth-century building style. Morningside kept its own government for many years even as the neighboring town grew around it.
