Crown Point

Crown Point is a city in Lake County, Indiana, situated on rolling terrain shaped by the Valparaiso Moraine. The downtown area centers on a historic courthouse surrounded by residential neighborhoods and local businesses.

The settlement began in 1834 when Solon Robinson established the first community, laying the foundation for its growth as an administrative center. A wooden courthouse soon solidified the town's role as the county seat.

The Grand Old Lady courthouse from 1878 anchors the town center and hosted political speeches that drew crowds during significant moments in American history. The building remains a gathering place where locals connect with their civic roots.

The town has a compact downtown area where visitors can reach historical sites and local services on foot. Parking is generally available, and the gently rolling terrain makes walking through the area straightforward.

The county jail became nationally known in 1934 following a daring prisoner escape that was later portrayed in the 2008 film Public Enemies. This incident briefly put the small town in the national spotlight.
