Columbus, County seat in Indiana, United States.
Columbus is a city and county seat in Indiana, located along the East Fork of the White River. Modernist structures shape the town's appearance, including works by well-known twentieth-century architects commissioned by local businesses and civic groups.
The settlement was originally called Tiptona in honor of General John Tipton in 1820 and renamed Columbus the following year. The arrival of the railroad in 1844 accelerated growth through trade and industrial development.
The architectural landscape includes modern buildings that stand beside older structures, showing how the town has grown through different periods. Gardens and plazas spread near some of these buildings, offering places where residents gather for community events or casual outdoor meetings on warmer days.
Public transit connects different neighborhoods with several bus lines, while regional highways offer access from greater distances. Many modernist structures sit within walking distance of each other downtown, making it easier to tour multiple areas on foot.
The Crump Theatre dates back to 1889 and holds the title of Indiana's oldest operating theater. It remains part of the Columbus Historic District and hosts performances and community events throughout the year.
