First Christian Church, Modern church building in Columbus, United States
The First Christian Church is a house of worship in Columbus, Indiana, built with a limestone facade and a tower rising about 166 feet (50 meters). Large rectangular windows run along the exterior and allow natural light to fill the interior spaces.
The building was designed by Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen and finished in 1942, making it one of the first American churches to apply modern architectural ideas to a religious building. This project helped establish Columbus as a city where contemporary architecture was taken seriously.
The church is known for its interior artwork made by Scandinavian craftsmen, which visitors can see throughout the space. These pieces give the building an international character that sets it apart from most American church interiors of the same period.
The main entrance is at street level and easy to reach on foot from the center of Columbus, Indiana. Visiting during a quieter time of day gives you a better chance to look around the interior without distraction.
The baptistry inside the church was positioned deliberately so that natural light falls on it in a specific way at certain times of day. Saarinen used this placement to express a theological idea through the building itself, turning light into part of the message.
