The Sunset Cafe is an architectural structure in Bronzeville, Chicago, originally built as an automobile garage in 1909. The building still holds its original bandstand, dance floor, and wall murals from its jazz club era.
The building was constructed as a garage in 1909 and became the Sunset Cafe in 1921. It was renamed the Grand Terrace Cafe in 1937 and received Chicago Landmark status in 1998.
The venue brought Black and white patrons together during the 1920s, which was remarkable for that era. Performances here helped establish a significant jazz scene that drew musicians from across the country.
