Sterling, Census-designated place in Fairfax County, Virginia.
Sterling is a settlement in Loudoun County, Virginia, located roughly 30 miles northwest of Washington D.C. The area is made up of housing developments, shopping centers, and maintained parks connected by wide roads.
The area remained largely farmland until the 1960s, when it was developed into a planned residential community. Over the following decades, the population grew rapidly as the capital region continued to expand.
The name comes from an early landowner and residents often shorten it to "The Rock," referring to a landmark in the area. Many families living here work in different sectors around the capital, and this shapes the daily rhythm of the neighborhood.
Main roads connect directly to major highways, and commuters can access several bus lines heading toward the capital. Public parks and shopping areas are easily reachable by car and tend to be busy during daytime hours.
The area sits close to Dulles International Airport, and on clear days planes taking off and landing are visible from many spots. Some of the parks along creeks offer surprisingly quiet trails that wind between residential areas.
