Merrybrook

Merrybrook is a two-story house in Fairfax County that blends Early Republic and Greek Revival design elements. The original structure was expanded between 1820 and 1950 with various additions including a kitchen wing, additional bedrooms, and living areas.

The property began as a farmhouse in the early 1800s and gradually transformed into a larger residence. From 1869 to 1923, it sheltered Confederate spy Laura Ratcliffe, who gathered intelligence on Union troop movements during her time there.

The way the house expanded with additional wings and rooms shows how domestic life changed over generations. Visitors can see how the family adapted their living spaces to suit different eras and activities.

The house sits south of Herndon in an area surrounded by modern development but still maintains its original agricultural setting. Since it remains a private residence, visitors can view the exterior and three preserved outbuildings from the property grounds to appreciate its historical context.

The property played a role in Civil War espionage through its resident spy and hosted important intelligence operations in the area.
