Old State Capitol State Historic Site, History museum and political landmark in Springfield, United States.
The Old State Capitol features a Greek Revival structure with three stories, yellow limestone walls, and tall columns arranged symmetrically across its facade. Inside, the layout and interior spaces preserve the original arrangement of chambers and offices from its time as a legislative building.
The building served as Illinois' fifth State Capitol from 1840 until 1876, hosting legislative sessions and court proceedings during those decades. After losing its role as the state seat of government, it transitioned to different uses.
Lincoln spoke about his bid for the Senate in the Illinois House chamber, which remains furnished with period pieces that reflect how lawmakers conducted business of the era.
Entry to the site is free and you can choose between guided tours or self-guided exploration of the rooms. Plan to spend a couple of hours here if you want to see all the chambers and learn about each one.
The entire structure was lifted several feet off the ground in a remarkable engineering project to raise the building and create space underneath. This elevation was done to preserve the structure and adapt it for a different purpose afterward.
