Illinois Governor's Mansion, Official residence in Springfield, United States
The Illinois Governor's Mansion is the official residence of the governor in Springfield and displays Italianate architecture with ornate cornices and decorative brackets. The building follows a modified I-shaped floor plan that extends from front to back.
The residence was completed in 1855 and stands as one of the three oldest continuously occupied governor's homes in the United States. It remains the oldest of its kind in the Midwest.
Presidents Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, Theodore Roosevelt, and Franklin D. Roosevelt attended various social gatherings and public receptions at this mansion.
The second floor contains a private seven-room apartment for governors, though residing here is not required. The ground floor operates as a museum open to the public.
A renovation in 2015, funded by private donations, earned the building a LEED Silver certification from the US Green Building Council. This honor recognizes efforts toward environmental sustainability.
