Grassy Island, River island in Wyandotte, US.
The 72-acre Grassy Island sits in the Detroit River, positioned north of Grosse Ile and west of Fighting Island, with steep earthen dikes surrounding it.
French explorers first recorded the island as Ile Marecageuse in 1796, when it measured only six acres before expanding through sediment disposal operations.
The island formed part of the Wyandotte National Wildlife Refuge in 1961, marking the beginning of federal environmental protection efforts in the Detroit River.
Access to Grassy Island requires watercraft, though visiting remains restricted due to the presence of industrial contaminants in the soil and surrounding area.
Between 1960 and 1982, the island served as a disposal site for millions of cubic meters of sediments from River Rouge, increasing its size substantially.
