Seaside Heights, Coastal borough in Ocean County, United States
Seaside Heights is a coastal borough in Ocean County, New Jersey, stretching along the Atlantic shoreline. The boardwalk runs roughly one mile parallel to the sandy beach and holds rides, arcade halls and restaurants facing the ocean.
The borough formed in 1913 from portions of two neighboring townships and quickly developed into a seaside resort with amusement facilities. Over the following decades, tourism infrastructure grew through the construction of hotels, guesthouses and dining establishments along the shore.
The name reflects the location by the sea and the elevated position on the narrow peninsula between bay and ocean. Visitors experience mainly the culture of beach life with a promenade, rides and vendor stands along the coast.
Access to the beach requires a beach pass during the summer season, available at the control office on the boardwalk or online. Most establishments on the boardwalk open in late spring and close after the warm season ends.
A wooden carousel from the early 20th century spins on weekends and counts among the few still working mechanical rides of its kind along the coast. The historical society preserves old postcards and photographs showing what the boardwalk looked like in earlier times.
