Shaker Heights

Shaker Heights is a planned residential city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. The nine neighborhoods spread around several artificial lakes and green spaces that shape the town layout.

Railroad entrepreneurs Oris and Mantis van Sweringen purchased the former Shaker colony land in 1905 and began systematic development as a residential settlement. Incorporation as a village took place in 1911 when the first streets and lots were laid out.

The name recalls the religious community that once farmed the land and crafted simple wooden furniture here. Visitors today find many Tudor and Colonial Revival houses in the residential neighborhoods, shaped by the original town planning vision.

A rapid transit line has connected the city directly to downtown Cleveland since 1920, making the commute easier for residents. Visitors can reach most neighborhoods on foot or by bicycle along tree-lined streets.

The local historical society preserves furniture and objects from the North Union religious settlement founded in 1822. About three quarters of the buildings belong to the protected historic district, which enforces special building regulations to maintain architectural character.
