Orange, Township in Essex County, United States
Orange is a township in Essex County in northeastern New Jersey, consisting of residential neighborhoods, commercial streets, and public facilities. The terrain sits on gentle hills between 164 and 194 feet (50 to 59 meters) in elevation and covers several square miles.
The settlement gained its status as an independent administrative unit in Essex County on November 27, 1806. In the following decades, it developed into a township with its own municipal structure and local self-government.
The name comes from the Dutch House of Orange, which played a role in the early colonial history of New Jersey. Many streets still show wooden houses from the 19th century that shape the character of the residential areas.
The township is well connected by bus lines from New Jersey Transit, linking it with surrounding places and larger cities in the region. Visitors can walk through the streets or use the local bus network to reach different neighborhoods.
The administration follows a system where elected representatives set the guidelines while a hired manager handles daily tasks. This division separates political decisions from practical implementation in the everyday life of the township.
