SS City of Milwaukee, Historic train ferry in Manistee, United States
The SS City of Milwaukee is a preserved train ferry spanning approximately 110 meters with five decks displaying original railway transport equipment and maritime artifacts. Visitors can explore the engine room, crew quarters, passenger areas, captain's quarters, and wheelhouse throughout the vessel.
Built in 1930, this vessel transported railroad cars across Lake Michigan between Wisconsin and Michigan until retirement in 1976. For nearly five decades, it served as a critical link for rail transportation throughout the region.
The vessel reflects how train ferries connected industrial regions and enabled commerce across the Great Lakes during the 20th century. The two railroad cars aboard show the daily operations and economic importance of this transportation route.
Summer months offer the best conditions for visiting, with guided tours regularly available and pleasant weather for exploration. The location is easily accessible from downtown Manistee and provides visitor parking.
The vessel preserves an intact steam engine system from the 1920s, revealing how heavy machinery operated in the early maritime era. The mechanical systems for loading and unloading railroad cars remain visible and operational today.
