Bloomsburg is a town in Columbia County, Pennsylvania, located on the north bank of the Susquehanna River. The place extends along the east side of Fishing Creek with Turkey Hill rising in its northern section.
Ludwig Eyer founded the settlement in 1802 and named it Eyersburg. The current form emerged in 1870 through a merger with Bloom township.
The place takes its name from Samuel Bloom, who founded the original settlement. His surname became a permanent part of the community and still shapes the identity of the town today.
The town is accessible by several roads that run north from the Susquehanna River. Most public facilities are located in the central area near the riverbank.
This place is the only one in Pennsylvania that officially holds the status of a town. All other municipalities in the state are classified as either cities or boroughs.
