Darwin D. Martin House, Prairie School residential mansion in Buffalo, United States.
The Darwin D. Martin House is a residential compound of several interconnected buildings in Buffalo, New York, designed according to Prairie School principles. Wide roofs, open floor plans and long bands of windows define the appearance of this expansive property.
Wright designed the property between 1903 and 1905 for Darwin Martin, a wealthy businessman from Buffalo. After decades of decay, the compound was restored starting in the 1990s and opened to the public.
The original owner commissioned Wright to design the furniture as well, so rooms and furnishings form a single whole. Many of these pieces remain on view today, showing what a modern American home looked like at that time.
Tours last about an hour and cover the main buildings as well as the gardens. It is advisable to book tickets online in advance, especially on weekends in spring and summer.
Some glass panes bear Wright's signature in the form of tiny embedded details. The compound also includes a separate guesthouse, now used for events.
