Lansdowne, borough in Pennsylvania, United States

Lansdowne is a borough in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, sitting just southwest of Philadelphia in a densely developed suburban area. The streets are lined with older row houses and detached homes, and a central commercial strip runs through the heart of the community.

Lansdowne took shape in the mid-1800s when a rail line was built connecting the area to Philadelphia, drawing residents who wanted suburban living close to the city. Over the following decades it grew into a self-sufficient community with its own schools, churches, and local services.

The name Lansdowne comes from a British aristocratic title, a detail that reflects the English roots many early settlers brought to this part of Pennsylvania. Walking the main street, you pass small shops, a movie theater, and community spaces that locals use on a daily basis.

The center of Lansdowne is easy to walk, with shops, a park, and local restaurants close together along the main street. Coming on a weekday gives you a clearer sense of how residents move through their neighborhood.

The Lansdowne Theater, built in the 1920s, still stands on the main street and is being restored by a local nonprofit rather than demolished or converted. It is one of the few surviving single-screen movie houses of its era in the greater Philadelphia area.
