Providence College, Private Catholic university in Providence, United States
Providence College is a private Catholic university in the capital of Rhode Island with buildings for teaching, housing and sports. The campus stretches over a larger area north of downtown with lecture halls, libraries, dormitories and open spaces for athletic events.
The Dominicans established this college in 1917 together with the Diocese of Providence when the first 71 students enrolled. Over the decades the academic offerings grew from the original liberal arts courses to the current 47 undergraduate majors and 17 graduate programs.
The campus hosts a required two-year seminar on Western civilization where students read works of philosophy, literature and history together. This tradition shapes academic life and creates conversations across all undergraduate years.
Visitors can inquire at the information desk about campus tours that show the grounds and main facilities. Access to buildings outside public events is often restricted, so checking availability in advance is worthwhile.
The campus has no fraternities or sororities, which is rather uncommon at American colleges. Instead students organize through the radio station WDOM and the television program PCTV, both run entirely by students.
