The University of Rhode Island is a research institution in the town of Kingston, Rhode Island, offering programs through nine colleges and over one hundred academic fields. The campus covers more than 1,200 acres and features granite buildings designed by the landscape architecture firm Olmsted, Olmsted & Eliot.
The institution was established in 1892 as the Rhode Island State Agricultural School, focusing on farming education. After introducing doctoral programs, it received its current name in 1951 and expanded its academic offerings beyond its original agricultural focus.
The Memorial Union opened in 1928 serves as a gathering space where students meet between classes, grab coffee or attend campus events. Inside the Kingston Memorial Union Hall, concerts and film screenings take place regularly throughout the academic year.
The campus is easy to walk or bike through, with paved paths connecting main facilities across the grounds. Most buildings have accessible entrances and ramps, and public restrooms are available throughout the site.
Biomedical engineering faculty use virtual reality technology to study visual hallucinations in patients with Parkinson's disease. This research is funded by the National Science Foundation and combines neuroscience insights with digital simulation.
