Loring Air Force Base, Strategic Cold War air base in Limestone, Maine, United States.
Loring Air Force Base was a large military installation in northeastern Maine with two extensive runways and numerous support buildings. The facility sprawled across a wide expanse of land, with hangars, administrative offices, and residential quarters distributed throughout.
The base was established in 1947 and served as a strategic outpost during the Cold War because of its proximity to Europe compared to other US installations. It closed in 1994 as Cold War tensions eased and military priorities shifted.
The base community included military families who accessed dedicated facilities such as schools, hospitals, and entertainment centers within the installation boundaries.
The site is now a commerce center and airport that visitors can explore to understand Cold War history. The grounds are accessible and offer plenty of space to walk around and view the remaining structures.
The facility housed the 42nd Bomb Wing, which operated specialized long-range B-52 bombers. These aircraft were a central part of nuclear deterrence strategy during the Cold War era.
