Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge, National Wildlife Refuge in Limestone, Maine.
The refuge covers 4,700 acres of wetlands, forests, and fields providing habitats for migratory birds, mammals, and diverse wildlife species.
The land transformed from military use to wildlife conservation in 1998 when the U.S. Air Force transferred the former Loring Air Force Base property.
The refuge conducts educational programs for schools and community groups to teach about wildlife conservation and environmental protection methods.
Visitors can access 13 miles of walking trails and two wildlife observation areas near the headquarters from sunrise to sunset throughout the year.
The refuge manages 2,400 additional acres of wetland conservation zones across Aroostook County, supporting American woodcock populations and waterfowl species.
