Little Switzerland, Mountain resort community in McDowell and Mitchell counties, North Carolina.
Little Switzerland is a mountain community along the Blue Ridge Parkway at about 3,468 feet elevation, with views across multiple valleys and distant mountain ranges. The settlement spans McDowell and Mitchell counties and features the Museum of North Carolina Minerals, which displays interactive exhibits on regional mining and local mineral collections.
The area was founded in 1910 when Justice Heriot Clarkson established the Switzerland Company to create a village with strict rules against alcohol consumption. This founding vision shaped the character of the community and set it apart from other mountain resorts of the era.
The community grew around the Church of the Resurrection, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999, which serves as the spiritual center of this mountain settlement. Its architecture reflects the building traditions that shaped this region during the early twentieth century.
The visitor center and museum facilities are easily reached via the Blue Ridge Parkway and are located on paved paths accessible to visitors with limited mobility. The best time to visit is during the dry months from spring through fall, when mountain roads are fully open and views are at their clearest.
The NC Highway 226A section, known as Diamondback, is famous for its sharp hairpin turns and attracts motorcyclists and sports car drivers year-round. This curvy mountain section is known among those who seek thrills on narrow, winding passes.
