The construction of Lock and Dam No. 24 began in July 1936 and concluded in March 1940, forming part of the Upper Mississippi River 9-Foot Navigation Project.

The Lock and Dam No. 24 Historic District earned recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004, encompassing multiple structures and buildings.

The main lock measures 110 feet in width and 600 feet in length, allowing commercial vessels and recreational boats to navigate between different river levels.

The facility maintains a reservoir capacity of 125,363 acre-feet and manages water flow across a catchment area of 140,900 square miles.
