Columbia City, county seat in Indiana
Columbia City is a town in Whitley County, Indiana, serving as the county seat with roughly 10,000 residents. Its downtown area hosts year-round events and has working businesses where visitors can find food, music, games, and shops.
The first settlement in the area dates to 1837, with the town founded in 1839. A railroad arrived in 1856, which triggered rapid growth and tripled the population between 1860 and 1875.
The town comes alive through regular community events like First Friday and Ladies Night Out, which shape how residents and visitors experience downtown together. These gatherings give local businesses a role in connecting neighbors and keeping the community engaged.
The town sits about 25 miles from Fort Wayne and is easy to reach by car. Downtown can be explored on foot, and parks plus the area around Big Spring Creek offer pleasant walking routes.
The town was renamed in 1854 after a close vote between two name options decided by just three votes. In its past, the town was also known as the largest producer of denim fabric in the world.
