Pyramid Arena, Sports arena in Downtown Memphis, United States
The Pyramid Arena is a former sports and entertainment venue in downtown Memphis along the Mississippi River bank. The building stands roughly 98 meters tall with triangular sides that measure about 180 meters at the base.
The venue opened in November 1991 and hosted basketball games for the University of Memphis and the Memphis Grizzlies. After the teams moved out in 2004, the building remained empty for years until it reopened as a retail space in 2015.
The pyramid shape serves as a daily reminder of the city's Egyptian name and appears in local conversations as a familiar landmark. Families and visitors now treat the building as a leisure destination where shopping and recreation blend into weekend routines.
The building sits near the Pinch District along the riverfront and remains visible from many points downtown. Visitors can reach it by car using wide streets or walk from the city center in a short time.
The interior now holds an artificial swamp with live animals, hotel rooms, and an observation deck near the top. This transformation turned an empty sports hall into an unusual leisure spot where different functions share the same roof.
