Tega Cay, city in York County, South Carolina, United States of America
Tega Cay is a city in York County, South Carolina, built after 1970 along Lake Wylie's shoreline. The community features more than sixteen miles of waterfront, with parks, walking trails, tennis courts, and a 27-hole golf course spread throughout the area.
A dam built in 1904 on the Catawba River created Lake Wylie, which shaped Tega Cay's landscape. The community officially incorporated as a city in 1982 after residents sought control over local development and governance.
The name Tega Cay comes from Polynesian words meaning 'beautiful peninsula,' reflecting the shape of land that juts into the lake. The community centers on outdoor activities and water sports, with residents gathering for boat parades and celebrations, especially on July Fourth, which marks the town's official birthday.
The town is accessible via Gold Hill Road and near Charlotte/Douglas International Airport for air travel. Local bus service is available, and visitors can rent boats and kayaks at the marina to explore the lake.
Early development plans largely failed until the 1982 incorporation became a turning point, and a 1993 settlement with the Catawba Indian Nation allowed expansion to resume. Today, the town celebrates its founding on July Fourth with fireworks, block parties, and boat parades organized by local property owners.
