The district's development began after the establishment of the Fort Mill railroad stop in 1852, marking the start of the town's commercial growth.
Confederate Park within the district contains monuments dedicated to Confederate soldiers, Catawba Indians, and includes a bandstand for community gatherings.
The district spans 5 acres and encompasses sixteen contributing buildings, one contributing site, one contributing structure, and four contributing objects.
The Jones Drug Store and First National Bank buildings represent the Late 19th and 20th Century Revival architectural styles in the central business district.
