The town was established in 1978 as a small mountain settlement in the Georgia highlands. It later developed into a recreational destination, attracting visitors interested in outdoor activities and mountain living.
The Foxfire Museum and Heritage Center presents regional traditions through demonstrations, food preparation techniques, and local craft exhibitions.
The main focal point is the Sky Valley Country Club, which offers an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, and other recreational facilities. Spring and fall are ideal visiting seasons when mountain weather is stable and mild.
A ski area operated here until 2004 with five runs across 16 acres, making it Georgia's highest-elevation ski facility. Though no longer operating, the ski heritage remains part of the local story.
